As we continue our Spotlight Series, we’re grateful for another opportunity to hear how God has faithfully guided and shaped one of His servants. Every spiritual journey is unique, yet each one reminds us that the Lord is continually at work—forming our character, deepening our faith, and inviting us to know Him more.
In this edition, we’re pleased to feature Major Margareta Ivarsson, Divisional Secretary for Spiritual Development in the Greater New York Division. Through her thoughtful reflections, Major Ivarsson shares lessons God has taught her along the way, the people who have influenced her faith, and the practices that continue to nurture her relationship with Christ. Can you share a resource that you can say has made a significant impact on your relationship with Jesus? How has it helped you grow closer to Him?
The most impactful spiritual practice for me during the last decade has been monthly attentiveness to Spiritual Direction. The grace and gift to consistently experience God’s transforming work over time by setting time aside to listen to and explore the Spirit’s movement in everyday life in accountability with another who is committed to prayer and deep listening to the Spirit’s movement, continues to surprise, empower, call and challenge me to love God and neighbor.
What is your favorite worship song, book, or podcast (you can list as many as you would like, but let us know why they are your favorite)?
I am a huge fan of all kinds of music that lift my soul and empower my artistic self. The Salvation Army Songbook is a favorite because our Wesleyan Theology in our songs can be sung and pondered both musically and as Sacred Reading. A current worship song that floods my heart is “Your Goodness Is Running After Me…” That is truly my testimony in this season.
What is the most meaningful Scripture verse to you, and why? If you have more than one, feel free to share- no restrictions.
I have always understood that joyfully following Jesus is possible because he calls and empowers me to love and serve humanity beyond my wildest dreams. This Scripture in the context of remaining in The Vine sent me into Sacred Covenant of Officership. It continues to call me to live deeply rooted and empowered by The Holy Spirit:
“You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name. This is my command: Love each other.” (John 15:16-17, NLT)
More recently, called, affirmed and certified as Spiritual Director, I am in awe how God continues to provide spiritual learning and becoming, refining and equipping to love and serve God’s people:
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” (Eph 2:10, NLT)
