Wired.I had the privilege of watching my grandchildren the other day. While emptying the dishwasher one of my 19-month old granddaughters started taking the silverware out. One by one, she handed me spoons and forks so I could put them away in the silverware drawer.

It goes without saying that it took longer as she would painstakingly remove one utensil at a time and hand it to me to be put away. It became a bit of a game as she grinned a little bigger with each utensil. I’d take it from her and say “thank you”. I realized the smile was something far more than if we were playing a game or doing some sort of activity. She was grinning because she was useful. She enjoyed helping me with the task at hand.

I was reminded that we are all wired for service. One of my favorite definitions of spiritual formation is “The process by which we are conformed to the image of Christ for the sake of others.” (Robert Mulholland) Those words, “for the sake of others” are pivotal in our spiritual growth. If we are growing to become more like Jesus for our own sake than we’ve missed the most important aspect of spiritual growth…..for the sake of others.

Yep…..we are wired for service.

A few days later I found myself helping at the corps with our feeding program. I felt like my little granddaughter…..delighted to serve another in Jesus’ name.

Yep…..we are wired for service.

“For you, my brothers, were called to freedom; only do not let your freedom become an opportunity for the sinful nature (worldliness, selfishness), but through love serve and seek the best for one another.” Galatians 5:13 (AMP)
