Microsoft Word - Document1Because the Christmas account is one that is so familiar to us, without realizing it, we tend to gloss over words because they seem to roll off our tongue. What would happen if paused for a moment to reflect on those well- worn and somewhat overlooked words and phrases?

Favor Rests

“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

Luke 2:14

Some translations explain the phrase “favor rests” as “follows those who please God”, “enjoy His favor” or “who please God and receive His approval”.

We are wired to receive affirmation and approval. We work toward it….we thrive on it. If approval is scarce, or worse yet, degrading feelings and word are directed our way, damage can be done to the extent that approval can become an addiction.

Is there someone’s approval you seek and it seems to fall short of the quotient of affirmation you seem to need? Keep in mind that Mary, the mother of Jesus, when hearing of her role in the Christmas story by the angel Gabriel was called “highly favored”. This was a simple peasant girl with no prominence in society. One wonders if she ever received any positive stroking from those around her and yet she had God’s stamp of approval!

When you feel forgotten, misunderstood or misrepresented remember God’s stamp of approval rests on you.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that I find favor in your eyes, not because of anything I’ve done, but because of who You are. Your approval is more than enough for me. Amen.
