Holy Week – Sunday
Expect the Unexpected

The women that went to the tomb were about to complete what was expected of them bringing their prepared spices, but their spirits were crushed after Jesus’ death. Can you identify with them?

They were looking for the dead body of their teacher but instead, they encountered unexpected events that in contrast to what they originally thought the day would be, brought new life and hope:  an earthquake, an opened and empty tomb, an angel with appearance like lightning with a message that would redirect the rest of their lives, “He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee” (Luke 24:6).

Jesus victory over death encourages us to a life of faith that is contrary to what is expected all around.  His victory was made our victory.  The empty tomb is Jesus’ living presence by us and for us every day. The empty tomb is Jesus’ living promise of direction and courage for what is and what may come knowing the deadly things around us are not the end, eternal life with Him in heaven is.  The empty tomb is Jesus’ living calling to each of us to renew our self in Him and continue to reach out and love others in His name.

Are there earthly concerns overwhelming you?  Death of loved ones (people or relationships) you’re having a hard time accepting? Look to that empty tomb to expect He can do the unexpected!  May you take heart today to seek the living hope in the risen Christ, just as these women did.

Prayer:

We conclude this Holy Week Devotional Series with an Easter blessing over each one of you:

The blessing of the Lord be upon you this day.  May your spirit be uplifted by Christ victory over death and all that may be dead in you or around you… He is the risen Savior!  He is the living Christ right by your side.
